| Description: | The Horso Creek Massacre in the 1880’s was one of the most brutal and defining events in Aboriginal and white relations in the Kimberley region. This story, passed down by Paddy Rattigan, was related to him by his father. A group of Aboriginal people were shot by white police after Paddy’s father killed a bullock. He was the sole survivor after hiding in the body of the dead animal. The incident brings topical events such as the land/pastoral rights debate into sharp focus. In Queenie’s rendition of the story, the police are represented with white hats holding their firearms while there pack saddles lie around a boab tree. The dead Aborigines have been shot including a mother and two infants which were left to die in the hot sun, their bodies were all burnt at the foot of a nearby mountain. |
