| Description: | Kuddtji Kngwarreye lives at Aneletye Outstation on Utopia. Kuddtji was the first artist on Utopia to use acrylic paint onto boards. His sister was the world renowned artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye who began many years later. This painting by Kuddtji depicts sacred Emu dreaming sites at Boundry Bore Utopia, relating to men's ceremonies. The concentric circles represent waterholes, these being the sacred Emu sites. They also represent sacred ceremonial sites, which are prohibited areas for women. The sites are those where men's initiation ceremonies are performed. Background dotting depicts visual aspects of the landscape such as grass areas, sand hills and vegetation.
Kuddtji lives at Utopia, 270 Km.N.E of Alice Springs. As in this painting, the Utopia artists use symbolic designs to represent their Dreamtime Stories. The topics are generally mythological ones with which the artists has a traditional relationship. The forms from which the Art takes it’s inspiration, include, old time ground painting, rock art, ceremonial body paintings and local flora and fauna. The concept of the Dreaming refers to the Ancestral past, to the actions of the Ancestral Beings, their travels across the landscape, and their direct involvement in the creation stories. The dreaming also refers to the Sacred Dimension of the present, the driving force that the people believe underlies the here and now. |
